What did I do to my foot?

Yesterday, as I was stepping out of my friend's van, I felt this intense pain on the top of my left foot, along the bone that leads to my big toe. The pain was so bad, but I thought it was just a foot cramp. I woke up today and it's extremely sore and swollen. What did I do?
